Welcome to Sao Tomé and Principe! Located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the coast of West Africa, Sao Tomé & Principe is a small archipelago made up of two main islands, Sao Tomé & Principe, and several smaller islands. It is the smallest African country in terms of surface area and population.
This archipelago boasts incredible landscapes and spectacular biodiversity. The palm-fringed white-sand beaches are surrounded by crystal-clear turquoise waters, making it a tropical paradise. You can relax on the picturesque beaches, explore the colorful coral reefs on dives and snorkels, or indulge in water activities such as fishing, kayaking and windsurfing.
The capital sprawls out to sea. 72,000 people live in this large tropical town, steeped in a colonial atmosphere. Fort São Sebastião, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, is home to the National Museum, which provides an overview of the country's history. Opposite the presidential palace, the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce cathedral was remodeled in 1956 and features beautiful azulejo mosaics on its interior walls.
Everywhere in the streets, remnants of colonial buildings with tired walls exude a 500-year history, while around the central market hordes of yellow cabs jostle with antique Western motorcycles, giving the whole a vintage charm to this pocket capital.
