Wadi Al-Hitan

Wadi Al-Hitan

Wadi Al-Hitan, also known as the Valley of the Whales, is an exceptional site located in Egypt's Western Desert. It was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2005 for its geological and paleontological significance.

Wadi Al-Hitan is renowned for its impressive rock formations, but above all for the whale fossils found in the area, which date back almost 40 million years. These fossils provide irrefutable evidence of the evolution of marine mammals and the transition of whales from land to sea.

You can explore this magnificent valley by walking along the marked trails and contemplating the unique rock formations, some of which reach heights of 20 metres. You can also admire the whale fossils on display, tracing the history of prehistoric marine life.

Because of its scientific importance, Wadi Al-Hitan is also a place of research and preservation. Ongoing studies are conducted to better understand the evolution of whales and the geological history of the region.

As well as whale fossils, the area also offers breathtaking natural beauty, with golden sand dunes and rock formations sculpted by erosion. It's an ideal place for photography enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

A visit to Wadi Al-Hitan is a unique opportunity to discover the history of life on Earth and admire spectacular landscapes. It's a must-see for science enthusiasts and those curious to learn more about evolution and paleontology.

Please note that, due to the scientific value and sensitivity of fossils, it is important to respect preservation rules and not to damage rock formations or whale remains.
